Moving Tips
Moving can sometimes be stressful and exhausting but it can also be a time
of great pride and excitement. If you don't plan on using a professional
moving service then it's time to call in "favors" from family
and friends-- especially those with trucks and strong backs!
Below are a few good ideas to consider that will help your move go more smoothly.
- Plan ahead by organizing and budgeting. Develop a master "to
do" list so you won't forget something critical.
- Sort and get rid of things you no longer want or need. Have a garage
sale, donate to a charity or recycle!
- Decide what, if anything, you plan to move in your own vehicle. Precious
items such as family photos, valuable breakables or important documents should
probably stay with you. Don't forget to keep a "necessities" bag
with paper towels, tissues, snacks, and other items you'll need that
day.
- Label every box on all sides. You never know how they'll be stacked
and you don't want to have to move other boxes aside to find what's
there.
- If you use a professional moving service-- keep your moving documents together
in a file. Include important phone numbers, driver's name, and the moving
van's license plate number. Also keep YOUR address/phone book
handy.
- Back up computer files before moving your computer.
- Inspect each box and all furniture for damage as soon as it arrives.
- Remember, most movers won't take plants. If you don't want
to leave them behind, you should plan on moving them yourself.
- If you are doing your own packing, remember that the moving company is
not liable for damaged boxes packed by the customer. Apply double or
even triple wrapping using bubble wrap, foam sheets, newspaper, etc.
- If someone has lived in your new home before you, then strangers may have
access to a set of spare keys. It's always a good idea to change
all the locks.
- If you are moving closer to your place of employment, you may qualify to
receive compensation for your moving costs. Deductions are available
for lodging, cost of moving and temporary storage of your household goods. Inquire
with the IRS or your accountant for more information and what receipts
you'll need to keep.
- Find some time to research your new location. You can access this
information by doing a quick internet search-- you'll be glad you did
your homework when you run out of milk or need a loaf of bread!
- Notify your local post office, banks, doctors, subscription/service providers
and friends of your new address. This will ensure on time delivery
to your new home.
